My Role

Solo UX/UI designer.

Research

Our research goal was to discover how people are currently learning new skills and why they want to learn in that way they do. We would like to discover users Pain-point, challenges and motivation when learning new skills.

Primary :User-Interview

I conducted an interview with four working professionals and one full time student who upgraded their skills recently and they said that their primary focus of learning efforts revolves around acquiring skills that directly contribute to their job and career advancement.

Overview of interview

  • Their main motivation in taking a course is to stay relevant by learning new skills.

  • When selecting an online educational platform-

  • The ability to apply the skills that are learned to a project is important.

  • The ability to ask an instructor questions about the course was important.

  • Flexible deadlines were important due to a more hectic life.

  • Has financial aid opportunities.

  • Their main motivation in taking an online course is to start their working career.

  • Find the absence of an instruction a pain point because it’s hard to keep them motivated.

  • Mentioned that applying for financial aid was challenging and frustrating.

  • Found peer review frustrating because the grading wasn’t consistent and the source of the grade wasn’t very knowledgeable.

  • The ability to apply the skills that are learned to a project is important.

Affinity Map

“Affinity Map created using what I gathered from user interviews and categorized under common themes”

User Persona

Upon conducting an analysis of the user interview and synthesizing the data into an affinity map, I was able to promptly identify distinct user groups and their corresponding categories.

Proposed Features

To begin with, I documented all the features on sticky notes, taking into account those that would align with both the business goals and the user's needs, thereby ensuring a balanced approach.

Feature Prioritization

Recognizing the mental models of my user groups, I took an additional step forward by brainstorming multiple ideas for features that could effectively address their challenges and I proceeded to categorize the comprehensive list of features into three distinct categories based on the findings from my research.

Must have

  • Providing a labs to practice their learnings.

  • Help learner to stay motivated, set goals, personalized their learning methods.

  • No fixed deadlines, learner should set their goal to finish their course.

Nice to have

  • Ensure access to education, reducing financial burdens of education, increasing diversity.

  • Community -Q&A forum , collaboration with other students.

  • Shareable certificate Will give motivation for the course learnings.

Can come later

  • Live streaming Allow instructor to teach live and attract more students.

  • Challenges- A fun way to challenge the classmates/ same learning group.

User Flow

I decided to make three user flow from creating an account to finding a course and completing a course. The user begins by creating an account, then selects a course, reviews the course overview, chooses a suitable plan, makes a payment, and proceeds to complete the modules of the selected course in a sequential manner until the entire course is finished.

Low-Fidelity Wireframes

After creating a user flow, I translated it into low-fidelity wireframe sketches to visualize how the user flow would come to life, and subsequently, I converted those sketches into digitalized versions of the wireframes.

UI Kits

Before going ahead with designing the high-fidelity screens, creating UI kit for a project to provide a standardized and cohesive visual and interactive experience for users.

Responsive Design

Its important to have flexibility for user to access this learning platform. The design of this application prioritizes web-based accessibility enabling users to engage in learning activities from any device. Its really helpful to offer a versatile web-based platform that accommodates user needs and provides a seamless learning experience.

Prototype

Usability Testing

Testing Plan Goal

  • To identify any usability issue with the task flow and understand the user expectation when navigating the platform.

Task Flow

  • Create an account.

  • Select a course.

  • Make a payment.

  • Submit an assignment.

Method

  • Moderate usability test.

  • 5 participants who has experience in online learning.

Based on feedback from two out of five participants, it was noted that the CTA button had three different wordings serving the same function: "sign up," "Join for free," and "Enroll for free." Therefore, I decided to revise the CTA button.

Reflection

This project served as a valuable learning experience, enabling me to refine my problem-solving skills and enhance my ability to empathize with users. It reinforced the importance of conducting thorough research, embracing feedback, and continuously iterating to create solutions that truly resonate with the target audience. One of the key takeaways from this experience was the importance of designing a solution that caters to a wide range of project types and skill sets.

Next Step

Given that many individuals encounter challenges in achieving their daily targets and goals, I intend to broaden the scope of this project and cater to a more diverse audience. To accomplish this, I will conduct an extensive series of user interviews and usability tests. The subsequent steps for this project are as follows:

  1. Continuously iterate on the existing features while also expanding their functionality.

  2. Develop and test additional features that are outlined in the case study.

  3. Enhance the user interface (UI) design and elevate the visual design elements.
